Fallon & Byrne: Swan Centre

Following our People’s Park project, we were asked by Fallon & Byrne to design their new restaurant and food emporium in the Swan Shopping Centre, which at the time was undergoing a major refurbishment. The work combined several units into one larger unit which straddled the original shopping centre and the new extension. A key component of the design was the external south facing terrace, and its relationship with the existing building and street, for which we introduced a sophisticated canopy system to allow outdoor dining throughout all seasons.

The scheme was designed using a contemporary language, which tied in with the restaurant operators identity, creating individual ‘shops within a shop’ providing highlights and focal points, with the coffee counter as centre stage. Use of a curved geometry for the deli counter contrasted with the straighter lines of other shelves and counters to guide customers in and around the food emporium. Individual shops were made bespoke, and this was reflected in the different wall treatments along the interior mall of the shopping centre. Our design uses clean lines and natural materials to maximise the area within a low ceiling space. Sliding doors open out onto a sunny terrace, sunken and screened from the street level by external planting. A retractable fabric roof provides shade and cover from the elements.
