Our proposals for the stables and yards at Rathfarnham Castle seek to reconnect the village to the castle and park, echoing their historically mutually beneficial relationship. Respecting the quality, legibility and character of the castle and farmstead, new interventions will contribute both functionally and physically to the historic setting. New forms and spaces will be reflective of these existing forms, but distinguishable from them. Activation of the stables and yards for positive public use of multi-purpose spaces, and space for arts, music, culture and heritage, mixed with cafe and retail space, will encourage footfall and connection between the castle and the park.
The stables and yards, like many historic structures, have wonderful potential for adaptive re-use, but this also comes with limitations, in terms of the extent of alteration that can be accommodated. Finding the right balance between intervention, alteration and retention is of the utmost importance, and it is imperative that new uses complement and enhance the complex, rather than detract from its historic character and cultural significance. Our aim is to add new layers to what is already successful at Rathfarnham. The overriding objective is to create a distinctive local marker, improve visitor experience, optimise dwell time, and passive surveillance to bring greater appreciation of the heritage and amenities within the park.
