Trinty Campanile Tower

Trinity’s Campanile Tower, a nationally recognisable landmark, was in urgent need of repair, to secure its structural integrity and conserve its cultural and architectural significance.Under our guidance conservation works were carried out by expert craftsmen, employing the highest standards, to ensure the retention of existing historic fabric and reinstatement of important features. Improvements to access and protection, and reversal of inappropriate previous works formed part of the works.

A complex, free-standing scaffolding system was built, independent of the structure, from which a printed shroud was hung, necessary for such a visible monument.Decorative cast-iron grilles and mullions, inset within the first-floor level openings, and over 4 metres in height, were carefully removed for full repair.  Stainless steel fixings and supports were put in place where required to minimise future corrosion, including the sympathetic insertion of steel beams within the bell tower to aid the stabilisation of the dome. Traditional lead work was installed on large projecting horizontal surfaces, and finely cut stone graft repairs inserted in a suitable Portland stone. A subtle, fully compliant lighting protection system, which provides cover to all buildings on Front Square was installed. The tower was completely repointed in lime mortar, following removal of cement, and impermeable paint was removed from the internal staircase. Inappropriate repairs to the statues were rectified by experienced masons.

Employing the highest standards in masonry, lead and cast iron conservation and craftmanship, we delivered an exemplar conservation project for this nationally important historic institution.
